The Perfume Bee

…all the buzz about eco-chic beauty and natural perfume

The Perfume Bee Goes “Green”

The Ornate Perfume Bee
Long-time readers of The Perfume Bee may have recently noticed a change in content as I write more about natural and organic fragrances and less about synthetic perfumes.

This shift is entirely intentional.

You see, I have switched to wearing only natural perfumes in my own life, and I feel compelled and delighted to write about these fragrances in this blog.

The reasons for this shift are both simple and complex, which I will address in a future post. But let it suffice to say that this decision comes after much careful thought and consideration.

As you know, I absolutely LOVE fragrance. And the thought of living a fragrant-free lifestyle was abhorrent to me, not to mention downright sad. Somehow I equated going green with going fragrance-free.

Fortunately, I was wrong. It is not an either/or proposition. Talented perfumers around the world are creating astonishingly beautiful natural fragrances that are both safe and lovely. I have had the very good fortune to begin sampling these fragrances and have gotten to know some of the perfumers through lively email and phone conversations.

In upcoming posts, I will share these discoveries and perfume reviews and interviews with you as I always have. I will also discuss the natural/organic dialog that is taking place in the world of perfumery and cosmetics.

And, finally, I am expanding my coverage to include discussion of natural cosmetics and personal care. These are a natural extension of my interest in eco-chic beauty. My focus will continue to be on perfume, but when I come across fabulous finds in the “organic beauty” category, I won’t be able to resist sharing them with you.

I know this is a lot to take in. But I try to live an integrated life and this new orientation is reflective of that principle. So, I warmly invite you to consider The Perfume Bee as your “go-to” source for all the buzz on eco-chic beauty and natural perfume. And, as always, I encourage you to share your thoughts with me.

Love,
Christine

It is a fantastic idea for you to go green! I’ve recently discovered the world of natural perfume and it’s been a revarding (and delicious) experience.
There are so many talented perfumers!
I hope you could do an interview with Liz Zorn of Liz Zorn Perfume. Her perfumes are breathtaking and she’d be an interesting person to talk to.

Chrsitine,

I commend you on your decision to go green! I did not know that green decisions could even be made in the world of perfume. True integration!
It makes sense that “the perfume bee” would gravitate for what is natural.

I enjoy your posts and looking forward to see how the future ones unfold.

Hi Veronica,

Natural perfumery is like another world, isn’t it! I’m so happy that you (and I) have discovered it.

I’m a big fan of Liz Zorn Perfume, too, and I am happy to say I will be interviewing Liz in the near future. I will also be reviewing some of her lovely fragrances. Stay tuned!

Thanks for writing!

Dear KWR,

Thanks for your kind words! Yes, it seems that there are ways to go green in virtually every area of our lives. And you’re right, it does make sense for the Perume Bee to get back to nature! LOL!

So good to hear from you!

Chris, I am so happy to hear of this, and your blog is now more luscious than ever — that’s the only word I can think of. Not just the naturals focus now, but the entire aesthetic, also. I must ask where you got the illustration for this entry — it looks like a flanker for the new guild logo in a way!

Hi Anya,

Thank you for your high praise!

The artist is Aleksey Telnov, who lives in the Ukraine. Her art is very viney-dreamy-floral and, in my opinion, very Art Nouveau. You’re right, it does have the same vibe as the new guild logo!

Thank you for commenting!

It is wonderful to have more and more people like you begining to understand the joys of going Natural.

I think there is enough pollution and toxins all around me on this dingy and tarnished planet - I certainly don’t want to put any on myself or my family ON PURPOSE by using artificial scents and bath & body products (This is why I make my own for us to use - so I know what’s in it).

There has been a wave of popularity for “naturals”, but because of this there are many out there who label products as “natural” when they have used a fragrance oil or some other horrid thing that is FAR from natural.
I see a lot with bath & body products.
A vendor will put in some natural ingredients and call the end product “natural”, but they also incuded F.O.’s or dyes… . They sell their wares and then later when some other vendor displays their products - customers want to know why ours cost more and don’t have the overpowering smells and colors that they’ve seen before and were used to.
We explain the difference and a few customers “get it” and become regulars. There are some folks out there who are searching for the REAL naturals that we offer and are so happy to have found us, but it is hard to make a living hoping for steady sales when you live in a small town.

I don’t outright sell over the internet because my website is not set up for that, but I have sent out a few large orders when it was requested through PoshPoints (more info on my website’s favorite links page about Posh).

My website is mostly to educate the public about organic gardening, recycling, and to give shop info to local people looking for what my little Vintage & Gift Shop has to offer. I also showcase the benefits of being as natural as possible.
Each of us who “gets it” can help to educate someone else and so on until we see a big difference.
Thank you for helping in this effort.
Diana
P.S. I found you through the Yahoo group - Natural Perfumery.

Hi Diana,

I agree with you that education is SO important. Knowing the facts is vital to making informed decisions that affect the wellness of ourselves and our planet.

And thanks for mentioning the Natural Perfumery Yahoo group. It gives me a chance to sing its praises — I encourage anyone interested in knowing more about Natural Perfumery to consider joining this terrific group.

Keep up the good work, and thanks for writing!

Christine
